Not much has happened recently.  Last week, I went in for EMG test on my right leg to determine the extent of any nerve damage due to my back disc issues.  After shooting electricity down my leg from my buttocks to my toes, I’m not sure what it told them, but I was ready to tell any secrets I had. There was a time when my leg was twitching that I asked: “Are you testing or torturing me?”  His reply was: “It could be both.”

I’ll get the results in a few weeks after the doctor sees them. Again, it has me wondering when did it become the standard for medical people to own your medical information instead of you?  I can’t see the results until my doctor sees them. That’s bogus!  It’s my body. I paid for the tests.  Well, that can be somebody else’s cause to fix. I’m too busy to fix that problem.  But I already vented about that  a while ago (see post titled “Medical Information”

Work has been busy, 10 – 12 hour days. But, I am beginning to see the slow down starting. Soon, I’ll be back to 8 hour days and will looking for some home projects to do.

Oh, last weekend, I also made some pots for the annual groundhog day event in Punxsutawney.  Rita gets a booth there and sells groundhog pots we make.  I made Shot glasses.

We have this pet groundhog (actually a family of them) that we turn loose in the studio when the pots are freshly made and the clay is soft in hopes they walk on the pots – putting their footprints in them.

If the groundhogs get too lazy, we turn Toby, our black and white cat, loose in the studio with them to stir them up.  We end up with some good footprint when the groundhogs bounce off the freshly made pots.

If you thinking the big pot in the picture is a large shot glass, it could be. However, it is intended to be a vase.  There is another small vase in the row of shot glasses. Can you find it?

I’ll post a picture of these after they are glazed.

I also created a blog for so our  supper club could share food experiences, recipes and stuff.  It is cosmicspatula.blogspot.com  We had our first dinner and it was a lot of fun.

Rita will be going to Albuquerque right after Groundhog’s day to help Jen with moving to New York.  I’ll be here with the dogs and cats for two weeks by myself.

snow again

Yep! Snowed again today. That is 13 days in a row that we have had snow. Now don’t get me wrong. I like snow. Its white, clean, quite, fluffy, smooth, fun to play in and I can tell where my dogs go when they wander away. But 13 days of it? Now, mother nature, can you give us a little break here?

Medical Information

Had another MIR today. When I asked if I could have a copy, they said I would have to get it from the doctor – that he would have to give permission to release it to me. When and why did we allow others to have the right over us getting access to our own medical information? I believe we should own our own information.

Time for a rebellion!
Then they asked if they could make a copy of the MRI CD I had from 14 months ago. Oh, I can’t tell you how many smart ass possible replies came into my mind to that question. Before I gave it over, I did ask why they wanted it. Their answer was valid, so I let the copy it. However, it felt good that I had control over my own medical information, instead of somebody else having control over it.

Dr Visit today

After waiting an hour for the neurosurgeon, he and his PA had me walk on my toes, heals, hit me with a hammer in a few places and then declared that I needed surgery. They had read the MRI results.

I asked a few questions and some regarding his experience with back surgery. It was then that I found he had no lack of ego. I think the question that got him was when I asked: “How come the other specialist didn’t say I needed surgery 14 months ago when she read the same MRI you saw?” He didn’t even get it that I was suggesting he was recommending I do what he knew best and made a living at. He just told me that he was better at reading MRI than she was.

I asked if maybe we should get a new MRI before we rush to conclusion. He was somewhat taken back by the fact he was working off a 14 month old MRI and didn’t know it. (I just love deflating egos and try to do it gently, but probably wasn’t to gentle in this case.) So we will get a new MRI and meet again a few days later.

I will check this guy out. This is not something I will do without knowing and feeling good about doing it.
Saying that, my back pain is worst today than it has been in the last four or five days. Go figure!
And, oh, what did I do while I waisted my time waiting Mr. Ego to honor me with his presence? I read the ‘Year in Science Discover’ magazine front to back. Then, just because they pissed me off waiting for an hour and never saying they were sorry, I took their magazine home for Rita to read.

A new year.

Ending in zero, divisible by 10 and 3. It is year I was taught that the odds were against me seeing. When I was in high school, the life expectancy for men was such that I would be dead by this year.
So much for high school.
So, last year can be summarized as energy spent with family, building, working for someone else, and working in our business. Of course there were a few camp outs, dog stick playing, sledding, stilt making, back aches, and other medical stuff to keep on healthy. But for the most of it, we worked our butts off.
So, what does 2010 hold? Well, a commitment to be more healthy, which means eating better, more exercise, loosing weight, and taking care of ourselves better. I would like to figure out what I want to do when I grow up.
I would like to purge myself of clutter and apply focus better. I would like to be more compassionate, improving my listing, and communicate with those I love. Finish some of our building projects. Get garage doors, flooring in the house, storm/screen doors, finish trim, grow something on our 15 tillable acres, and get my fat dog to trim down before she blows out a hip.
That’s enough. Probably over committed, but hey, lofty goals are worthy ones.
Oh, and I have to shovel the porch and clean the driveway a few times before then.
